Welcome to Ballet San Joaquin!
Ballet San Joaquin,(formerly, San Joaquin Concert Ballet) was formed by Dorothy Percival in 1966. At the time Ms Percival was a principal dancer with the Sacramento Ballet Company and owner of a private dance academy in Stockton. While her school taught a variety of dance styles her main love was always ballet. So, she set about realizing her dreams which were to direct an accomplished regional ballet company, increase her community's knowledge of good classical ballet technique and excellent choreography, and provide opportunities for exposure to world class guest artists. Over the years the company has changed it's name to Ballet San Joaquin and is now under the umbrella of the non-profit organization. P.O.P.A. (professional organization for performing artists) . BSJ has also had the honor of performing on 11 Gala evening performances with the Pacific Northwestern Regional Ballet Association, presenting at least 30 Nutcracker Ballets, with numerous guest artists, and has given several choreographers a place to show their work.
P.O.P.A.'s latest project is The New Children's Ballet Theatre. Conceived in 1997, TNCBT is a stepping stone to Ballet San Joaquin that utilizes dance in the interpretation of children's literature. It has been hugely successful, bringing hours of entertainment to public and private schools in the San Joaquin Valley through free field trips. This year TNCBT will be joined by Ballet New York, a professional company based in New York and directed by Judith Fugate and Medhi Bahiri, that recently received great reviews on their performance at the Alvin Ailey Dance Center.
